Modern Fiction

I’m presently writing an op-ed on education for my OAC Intermediate Writing class. Since I’ve been out of high school for more than a few years, I need an update and/or refresher on some of the modern “relevant” literature that’s often taught in English classes today in lieu of the classics of the Western canon. For example, I know that I was most unhappily assigned Toni Morrison’s Sula and Ralph Ellison’s The Invisible Man, but I’m having trouble thinking of others. So what other unworthy modern fiction is commonly taught in schools today?
