No Philosophy in Action Radio on Sunday

This Sunday morning, we’re putting doggie Mae to sleep for the aggression problems that I discussed here. At the same time, we’re also putting kitty Elliot to sleep too: his heart is definitely failing, and by keeping him alive, we risk him throwing a clot and thereby having a terribly painful end. My wonderful, wonderful vet is making a special trip out to our place on her day off to do this.

So Sunday will be a terribly day for me, and I couldn’t even think of broadcasting. I know that we’re making the right choice, but still, this is so hard.

The More Cats Change…

When I return home after a few hours away, the various members of my menagerie of beasts respond in basically the following ways:

Dogs: You’re home! OMG, we’re so excited to see you! YAYAYAYAY! We’re going to celebrate by running around outside. Don’t worry, we’ll be back in a few minutes, after we’ve sniffed some stuff. We’ll want to lie near you, just because we missed you so much.

Cats: Why were you gone so long? We were hungry. Feed us now. Also, don’t do that again; it’s just not fair to us.

Horses: Yo.

These videos of a cheetah chasing and playing with its doggie companion are just awesome.

I wonder if the big cat ever accidentally injures its canine companion, as sometimes happens with humans who’ve raised big cats from birth. I suspect that dogs can read the body language of the cat better — and communicate better too. But I’d love to ask a zookeeper that!

Naughty Kitty Merlin at the Vet

At the vet two weeks ago, naughty kitty Merlin was very enthused to be in a new place with much to explore. First, he opened the cabinet (overcoming the child-proof lock in seconds) and explored inside for a while.

Then, most unexpectedly, he climbed up into the drawer of medical supplies, refused to leave, and ultimately got stuck.

After I took this picture, we were able to free him, although that was harder than expected. He was much more subdued after that, until he went for the cabinet again.

My vet was very amused — and amazed too. Me, not so much! Naughty kitty Merlin is naughty!

Dog: HURRY UP, CAT! WE DON’T HAVE A MOMENT TO LOSE!
Cat: I’m working on it, don’t rush me!

Conrad Loving on Merlin

Our dog Conrad would have killed and eaten our cats when we adopted him at a year old. It took me a year of daily training to be able to leave him loose in the house with the cats. Now, about four years later, he’s routinely loving on and attempting to dominate kitty Merlin… and Merlin loves it! I don’t worry about Conrad hurting Merlin. He’s always been gentle. Plus, Merlin has sharp claws and very speedy reaction times!

See for yourself:

Oh, how I love the sappy music! :-)

No Cats on Tables

We have a strict “no cats on tables” policy Chez Hsieh, as Kitty Elliot demonstrates here:

If Kitty Merlin Were Human

When I left for my lesson last week, kitty Merlin was having a party in our bathroom with his buddies “bathmat” and “fuzzy mouse.” When I returned about three hours later, the party was still in full swing.

If Merlin were a human, he’d be that loveable jerk of a roommate who drinks all your beer, sleeps with your ex-girlfriend, and forgets to repay you the money he borrowed last week … but he’s just such a fun-loving dude that you just can’t stay mad at him.

Cat Versus Stuffed Bobcat

This video is hysterical.

The incident reminds me of Lila. I’ve trained her to touch scary objects such as trash cans in exchange for a treat. The silly girl often bops the trash can with her nose just hard enough to rock it a bit back and forth… which is OMG, SCARY! She startles, and I laugh at her every time.
